IAPD Presented at Global Road Safety Forum
April 2013—International Academy for Professional Driving announced its participation in the DS Americas Road Safety Forum in Houston, Texas. The forum, organized by Shell, was assembled as part the United Nations' Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020. With a goal of zero incidents, “Arrive Alive” is this global corporation’s campaign for reducing road deaths and injuries around the world.
Forum participants included international transport and energy leaders who shared a professional and personal commitment to the well being of people, communities, and business operations. IAPD’s Rod Davis and Brian Turner were invited to participate and present during the forum’s two-day series.
Early in the first session, Davis presented “Defensive Driving Best Practices.” His interactive lecture covered 12 imperatives for building, executing, and sustaining a comprehensive, internal defensive driving program.
“When you consider that nearly 1.3 million people die every year on the world's roads, and up to 50 million are injured, driving is one of the greatest threats to work safety, ” said Davis. “The goal of the talk was to help organizations better understand the liabilities and directly related risks associated with workplace safety. We reinforced the need to develop and apply effective driver training for all employees, on and off the job.”
Davis’ second presentation, “Motor Vehicle and Incident Investigation,” highlighted the human, environmental, and mechanical elements critical to every investigation. Participants had the opportunity to learn about multidisciplinary approaches for investigation training and incident prevention.
“One of the most valuable aspects of the forum was open dialogue about our current reality versus safety goals,” said Davis. “Participants demonstrated leadership in honest discussions about the business and human sides to mitigating risk.”
